Director
"Meditation and daily life practice are a path of discovery because there is something to be discovered. It is called the Nature of Mind, Buddha Nature or the Indestructible Heart Essence. But what is it? That is what we each have to discover within ourselves. The path is the awakening process by means of which we come to recognise it."

Rigdzin Shikpo

Never Turn AwayNever Turn Away: The Buddhist path beyond hope and fear - Rigdzin Shikpo

Taken from Rigdzin Shikpo's Heart Essence teachings. Includes clear and practical advice on formless meditation and daily life practice with a special emphasis on the development of openness. Structured around the Buddha's Four Noble Truths, but expressed in terms of the Mahayana Maha Ati tradition. The foundation of the path of Longchen training and a core text for Longchen students.

The title comes from a teaching Rigdzin Shikpo received from Trungpa Rinpoche, who said that we should always turn toward those things that scare us, open to them completely, and never turn away from them. This path of direct openness is a hallmark of Dzogchen practice, and Rigdzin Shikpo's words shine with authenticity and freshness.

Reviews

"A wonderful guide to putting the Buddhist teachings into practice, unique in its clarity, profundity, and heart"
Douglas J. Penick, author of The Warrior song of King Gesar

"This is one of the finest, most compelling books on Buddhism I have ever read. In its simplicity and clarity, in its depth and extraordinary subtlety, it surpasses most of what has been written on the subject. Expressing the profound essence of Tibetan Dzogchen in contemporary, highly experiential language, the author not only opens the innermost mysteries of Tibetan Buddhism, but shows us how we ourselves may follow the path to complete human realization. This book expresses the remarkable, unique, life-transforming dharma of his own teacher, Chogyam Trungpa, who taught meditation as a way to open up the full, liberating depth of our human experience as modern people. In his study and devoted practice, Rigdzin Shikpo has been working on this book for forty years and the result is brilliant and joyful and truly stunning."

Reginald Ray, author of Indestructible Truth - the living spirituality of Tibetan Buddhism

"Never turn away - a simple suggestion, encouraging us to enter into direct communion with all aspects of our lives. Why? The answer is delivered here with brilliant, clear teaching that is inspiring, practical, and valuable for all meditators."

Larry Rosenberg, author of Breath by Breath

"These teachings are brought vividly to life in Rigdzin Shikpo's characteristic style, which is very clear, direct, simple, and down to earth. Making inspired connections across the boundaries of Buddhist thought, the techniques described here are linked to the Four Noble Truths, the traditional basis of the Buddha's teaching."

Francesca Fremantle, author of Luminous Clarity and translator with Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche of the Tibetan Book of the Dead.

Openness Clarity SensitivityOpenness Clarity Sensitivity - Rigdzin Shikpo

Advice and guidance on increasing openness/spaciousness, clarity/ awareness and sensitivity/responsiveness in formless meditation and in everyday life. Suitable for both a complete beginner and an experienced practitioner, this book introduces us to the nature of our true mind. Used as a textbook for Longchen Foundation training courses.

In this series of talks Rigdzin Shikpo stresses the importance of having confidence in the nature of mind - the indestructible heart essence of our being. He helps us to dispel our own self doubt and hesitations, opening the way for us to relate to the teachings of the Dzogchen tradition to which he belongs.

"Buddhist practice is about developing stability of mind through appreciating the three qualities of openness, clarity and sensitivity - not just in meditation but also in daily life. The three qualities pervade all our experience and as we practise they are gradually revealed or unveiled. Buddhist practice removes those things that prevent the three qualities expressing themselves in their fullness within our experience and thus prevent them from radiating out into the world. Openness, clarity and sensitivity are the essence of our being and the source of all that is good, genuine and true about us; they are the source of life itself and give rise to the sense that there is something to attain, something to realise, something beyond ourselves and even beyond the world, to which we can aspire." Rigdzin Shikpo.

Progressive Stages of Meditation on Emptiness - Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rimpoche

In this concise and clear presentation of the different stages of meditation on emptiness, Khenpo Rinpoche introduces several different approaches to understanding and directly realizing emptiness. Starting with the Sravaka meditation on not-self, he moves throug the Cittamatra or Mind Only approach, then the two kinds of Madhyamika (Svatantrika and Prasangika), finishing with the Shentong view.

The realisation of emptiness is central to all schools of Buddhism, and Khenpo Rinpoche makes these profound teachings accessible to the meditator in stages of increasing subtlety.

Translated and edited by Shenpen Hookham.
