"Meditation and daily life practice are a path of discovery because there is something to be discovered. It is called the Nature of Mind, Buddha Nature or the Indestructible Heart Essence. But what is it? That is what we each have to discover within ourselves. The path is the awakening process by means of which we come to recognise it."

The Longchen Symbol Explained

The Longchen Symbol Illustration

The innermost circle represents the Indestructible Heart Essence, that which we essentially are. It touches the inner triangle of Openness, Clarity and Sensitivity indicating the inherence of Openness, Clarity and Sensitivity to the Indestructible Heart Essence.

The second circle, Meditation, contains within it the inner triangle and is itself contained within the outer triangle of the qualities of Mandala, Confidence and Heart Wish. These two triangles are dynamically conjoined through the communicative power of Meditation.

The outer circle which binds all together is the Daily Life Practice, which is nothing other than the activity of Endless Compassionate Vision, the practical expression of Mandala, Confidence and Heart Wish, linked through Meditation to the intrinsic qualities of Openness, Clarity and Sensitivity, which spring directly from the Indestructible Heart Essence.

White is the colour of the Indestructible Heart Essence which is the basis, the essence of everything. Blue is the Clarity which is intrinsically open and sensitive. Yellow is the equal balance of the faculties (Indriyas) in meditation. Red is the qualities that evidently appear in the animate and the inanimate universe. Green is all the activities of existence.
